pigments in common ingredients used for feed in Australia do not normally contain sufficient carotenoids to give the colours of egg yolks or skin/shanks that are desired by consumers - for example a corn-based layer diet will produce eggs with a fan score of about 7-8, which is a pale yellow - supplementation of these diets with pigments will allow the required colours to be achieved - colour is best established by application of good quality stable pigments |
