What quantities of pigments are needed?

the amounts of red and yellow pigments to use depend on the amount of corn in the feed, and the depth of colour required

larger amounts of pigments, especially red, are required to achieve high colour scores

the following tables provide guidelines for the quantities to use

note that the very small amounts of these pigments require premixing before addition to the mixer

•pigments in common ingredients used for feed in Australia do not normally contain sufficient carotenoids to give the colours of egg yolks or skin/shanks that are desired by consumers - •for example a corn-based layer diet will produce eggs with a fan score of about 7-8, which is a pale yellow  - •supplementation of these diets with pigments will allow the required colours to be achieved  - •colour is best established by application of good quality  stable pigments
